The 2012 Vocational Training Team to DISTRICT 9400 They plan to be working jointly with a VTT Team made up of experienced educators from District 9400 to develop a seminar to train educators
in South Africa the methodology of teaching students who have English as a second language,
Team Leader Mary Jean Gallagher
My goal is to enhance literacy learning and teaching in three countries through leading a collaborative program for educators in South Africa, the United States and Canada. I expect the experience to result in improved teaching of literacy and English language learning in our countries, and that it will build greater understanding and goodwill among people with whom we come in contact. I believe that peace will only be created and maintained when all the world's children have access to adequate health care, education and nutrition. My twenty-year commitment to Rotary has been built upon this premise.

I hope to make a sustainable difference in the literacy of the community served by District 9400 in South Africa. I am also excited that this training will be enriched because it will be jointly executed by both VTT teams, thus addressing the needs and the learning styles of the participants.
Increasing English language skills will not only increase the potential success on post-secondary entrance tests but a solid knowledge of English opens definite social and economic doors for South African learners. English acts as an important language in commerce both within the country as well as in international contacts. Training those who do the teaching will provide the satisfaction of knowing that our efforts will make a difference after we have returned home. I also hope that this VTT will be the beginning of future joint efforts in literacy with the South Africans.
I also hope to make many new friends in the process.
Team Member Sue Albu
My heart is in development work! My goals for this training are: to welcome the South African educators to my classroom and my school; to learn about their school system and the needs of their students; to share my knowledge and ideas while working together to plan and deliver the seminar to teachers in South Africa; to meet and interact with teacher and students.
Team Member Sue Chanko
I have always wanted to help out abroad, in particular in South Africa. I have support the AIS Committee of Windsor and through this organization have had the opportunity to meet some South Africans and "American relief workers from the region. I have always felt moved by the hardship many have faced and have, for a long time, wanted to help out in some way. I am so glad that through this opportunity I can use my professional skills and passion for education to support growth in this area of the world.
Team Member David Lynn
This training is an opportunity to enhance my personal and professional learning, and to enrich my cultural awareness through service learning. With reference to Grenfell's statement, "The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth", this is an opportunity to pay my rent by serving the international community through the sharing of my personal learning, skill an experiences to help build the capacity of South African ESL teachers and administrators. I also hope to make new personal and professional friends.
