As has become the custom, today was the very best day of our entire Rotary year!
Today was our Sandra Sagear Scholarship presentation day. We had a full house at our new clubhouse....nearly 100 guests for breakfast including nearly every active member of our Rotary club! We were packed and we were rocking....and a quite a few were sniffling too!
Deb Madonna, Bill Pratt, Mary Novrocki, Andrea Burdette, David Haslam and our entire Education-Vocational Service Committee are to be praised and thanked for the great job they did in creating awareness of our very unique and special scholarships, for finding the right candidates, for conducting the interviews and for helping to Make Dreams Real for 19 terrific and very deserving young people from right here in our world...and for their proud and grateful families. We heard some incredible stories today. The neat thing is, these kids are proud of themselves for having overcome some incredible challenges...and they KNOW they are going to make it. Today they learned today that there is a whole community of former strangers out there who also believe in them, who are wishing them well and who KNOW that they will keep on overcoming their challenges and that they will succeed. For the record, we gave out 19 scholarships totalling $9500 and through the efforts of our E-V Committee, we were able to garner another $7500 in matching grants from Schoolcraft College Foundation and Henry Ford Community College Foundation.

It was terrific to have a few of our Interact and Rotaract members on hand too...and a wonderful opportunity to "plug" these two Rotary A.M. off-spring organizations to the graduating seniors and to their families.

Thank you, too, to our entire Rotary Catering Corps and to all the members of our Membership and PR and Community Service Committees for joining forces and putting together one beautiful and impressive breakfast banquet today! Special thanks to our head chef Beth Stewart and her sous chef Patrick Olson, to our line chefs Pat Berkopec, Joanne Lamar, Dorian McGlannan, Mary Novrocki and Tim Patino and to our Dining Room Manager Tim Patino and his dining experience assistants Phyllis Pulty, Jack Flynn, Pam Hendrickson and Tammy Trudell from the PCAC for conjuring up for us a beautiful dining room and a breakfast buffet fit for a luxury liner! What a way to begin to bring to a close our 2008-2009 Rotary year!
Kate
