No Child Without A Christmas and No Family
With-out a Holiday Meal.
The LARGEST Volunteer Local Community Event
in District 6400
First thing first, Thanks to everyone. You all came be so proud, we pulled off another very successful Goodfellows program this year. But as we know the year is not over and we are really never done. But this weekend is over and I have a few numbers to give you. We serviced 148 families with food baskets that consisted of a very large box of mixed food items, a turkey, a 10lb bag of potatoes, a bag of apples and a $25.00 gift certificate from our local grocery store. The seniors in our program got a box of Clementine oranges instead of apples. All of the seniors also received a home-made blanket from some of our Goodfellow supporters. We then provided toys to 257 children up to the age of 12 years old. This consisted of 3 major toys, 3 small items for stocking stuffers, a hat and mittens, a stuffed animal, a book and each family received a family game. We did this all with the help of most of the members of our Great Rotary Club and other volunteers that totaled ----497----. WOW. That total is from the Sat after Thanksgiving when we sold our Goodfellow papers on the corners of Huron Township, the Friday when we transported food and toys to Huron High School , Sat 12-16-11 when we gathered at Huron High School to organize all of the food and toys and Sun 12-17-11 when we gathered again at Huron High School to build and distribute all of the food and toys.
I also can’t thanks our School District enough. The first thing is they allow us to use the Media Center in the High School each year. Without that I do not know of a place big enough to put this program on. Then each of the schools did a canned food drive, the elementary schools also did a hat and mitten tree for us. The Jr. High School students and staff donated a very large amount of money that was raised from their Market Day program where all of the kids make an item that they in-turn sell at lunch time to the other students and staff, to their Hat Day Fridays where they pay $1.00 or 2 cans of food to wear a hat in class all day. One of our local Cub Scout packs also did a canned food drive and donated that to our program, they collected 186 boxes of food and 483 cans of food. That comes to approximately 360 lbs of food just form the Cub Scouts.
As I said earlier in this e-mail we are not done, while writing this I received a phone call from a person that is need of some help and had missed all of the other programs. It is a single father that has 4 kids and he is just starting a new job and is behind on everything. So we will look through everything we have left and maybe so shopping to provide them with some needed items for Christmas.

Over 330+ people participated in sorting, packing, and distributing over the last three days - Fr, Sa, Su. This is an amazing number of people who are randomly called together for this cause of providing gifts and food for 170 families - including 300 children. When you consider that the link is for someone else to have a better Christmas - or to have one - and that it could be a casual conversation, an article in the paper, or a membership in an organization, that gets the word out. HT Rotary certainly demonstrates that they can and do what is best, putting Service above Self.
(Probably the largest volunteered community service project in District 6400!)

The Huron Township Rotary awarded $9500 in scholarships to high school seniors as part of the Huron High School Academic Awards Program held May 20th. R.P. Lilly, a township board member and Rotarian, opened by stating that “selecting the scholarship recipients from the applications is never an easy task, and it gets more difficult every year. Scholastic achievement, community service, and financial need are some of the factors considered in the selection process.”

GOODFELLOWS EVENT
2008
It can’t be said that the Huron Township sits back and watches. Under the guidance of Rotary wives Linda Burke and Helena Lilly, the club successfully launched and led the annual Goodfellows drive following the theme “No Child Without A Christmas.
”
The initiative continued with the sale of the Goodfellow papers on the Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday. An overwhelming response in giving provided a basis for the gifts that over 162 families, with 323 children, received this year. In addition, the personal donations from others helped this cause. The Huron School District stepped right up to the cause. Brown Elementary offered a mitten and hat tree, Miller Elementary sent just under 3000 cans of food, Renton Junior High sold items in their special pre-Christmas sale that the students had created and donated an overwhelming amount of money. The high school students joined in with the Toys for Tots initiative. But the district did not stop there: the Huron Service Employees, Teamsters 214 solicited their members for support and they began on the day of the Goodfellow paper sale by driving from corner to corner in the mini bus and giving the corner workers a chance to warm up! The mini bus carried the cans from Miller to the high school when the sorting and packing began too.
There are so many people to thank for their efforts and the 173 volunteers on Sunday alone (over the two days of sorting, there were 220 volunteers), ranging from both boy and girl scout troops, Outdoor Challenge, public and fire safety, members of the Honor Society at the high school and the Junior Honor Society at Renton, the Superintendent of Schools, team members from the custodial and maintenance crews, and the donations from Garden City Hospital employees, Apple Charlie’s Orchards, and many more who just heard about the effort and stopped by to give of their time.
But the effort does not stop here. The Huron Township Rotary represents the Goodfellows all year round. And their collection for the following year began in the post-Christmas sales and will stretch through the coming months.
