DG Michael Duben's Official Visit

Essex County Rotary Clubs
A combined Rotary meeting held on Monday, November 22nd at Colasanti's Tropical Gardens. It was attended by the clubs of Amherstburg, Cottam, Essex, Harrow and Leamington. DGE Michael Duben, AG Arnie Charlton and AG Bill Pook also attended.

Guest speaker was Joe Colasanti himself talking about the history of the Colasanti's business and how it has evolved over the years into a wonderful tourist destination for the area. A delicious buffet dinner was served including Colasanti's famous broasted chicken. A 50/50 draw had the winnings benefiting Rotary Foundation. Books were collected for the Rotary Adult Literacy project and presented to John Chambers of Detroit AM club, who made the drive across the river to join us. Food donations were also collected to be given to the area Salvation Army food banks.

Also, each club was given the opportunity to share a past or upcoming event during the evening meeting (ie. Christmas Tree sales (Leamington and Cottam), Leo's Comedy Night event Jan.21st (Essex), Winemakers' Spring Celebration Gala April 15th (Harrow), and the recent donation of $140,000 to Miracle Field (Amherstburg), Motorcycle Poker Run in June, 2011 (Leamington, Essex, Harrow).

It was a wonderful evening for everyone who attended (just over 80 attendees). It is hoped that this special meeting can become an annual event.

Amherstburg Rotary Club - Helps get a $8 Million Grant!
Recreation Project

An Explosive Announcement  - That is how Mayor Wayne Hurst described Friday morning's announcement of $7,866,887.66 from each of the federal and provincial governments under the Build Canada Fund towards the recreation project planned for Larry Bauer Park. Premier Dalton McGuinty and Canada's Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities John Baird joined Essex MPP Bruce Crozier, Essex MP Jeff Watson and town council for the announcement, made at Amherstburg Arena.

"Rotary Club of Amherstburg president Mike Vossen, whose group has helped spearhead the Miracle League project, said they are hoping the funding announcement will help bolster their club's membership. They were approached by Dzombak about taking part and said for the last couple of weeks he was wondering if they would get the funding or not. However, he was confident in the Miracle League aspect of the recreation project".
