| The Southgate Rotary Club Sponsors Fishing Derby for Special Needs Children
Southgate, MI – The Southgate Rotary Club sponsored its 21st Annual Fishing Derby on Thursday, June 3, 2010. There were 34 special needs children from the Southgate School District who were given the opportunity to have a positive outdoor experience and learn how to fish in a safe environment. Rotarian Mary Yurko has been the chairperson of the Fishing Derby since its inception. Along with other Southgate Rotarians, Southgate Teachers and Parents they worked together in a one on one setting to teach the children the art of fishing. Lunch is included along with field games in the afternoon. Rotarian Don Treadwell was the chef for the day. As a memento of the day, each child was given a special Hooked on Fishing T shirt provided by the Rotary Club. Dan and Kelly Dwyer of Michigan Memorial Park provided the catch and release fishing experience on Lake Sylvan located at the entrance to the park and the picnic and field games were held at the Heston Recreation Area in the park. Steve and Harry Ahles make sure all the poles were strung and provided bait throughout the event. Along with Rotarians John Lucher, Paula Anderson and Boy Scout Leader Paul Knott who assisted the children in fishing. |
