Schoolcraft College - Rotaract Club
Thanks to everyone who participated in Saturday's Make a Difference Day with the Liberty Hill Housing Corp http://www.libertyhillhousing.com/, in Belleville, MI at a home for four adults with disabilities!
Thanks to Plymouth AM Rotary President Kate Rosevear http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/home/homeF.asp?cid=648, who truly taught me how to swing an ax to take down the "big trees," and whom brought the delicious Panera Bagels, coffee, and hot chocolate (our President is one tough lady--very, very strong--loved you before Kate, but love you even more now!).
Thanks to our Plymouth AM Rotary President Elect Tom Sweeny, who brought his professional painting skills to the Belleville home by then 7:30 a.m. start time, and whom was still there working to paint three bedrooms, masterfully, with not a drop of paint on him, when we left at 3:15 a.m. to drive the students back to campus.
Thanks to Liberty Hill Housing and staff, but, specifically, Nicole, Bill, and Tony, for including us in this incredible day of service, sharing, and pride (and delicious Subway lunch and Tim Horton's breakfast)--please invite us back; thanks to the "nice neighbor," who brought his chainsaw, ladder, tools, push broom, and nozzle (so I could power wash ick off of the driveway and sidewalk).
Thanks to the Eastern Michigan Service Fraternity that worked along side us and became our friends.
Thanks to my husband who pulled shrubs, brush, weed,s chopped down trees, helped me in and out of the dumpster, planted shrubs, and re-rocked the whole front yard with my students Evan and Josh; thanks to the under age 18 kids, Vanilza's daughter Claudia; my nieces, Emmaline and Caroline; and my son, Alex (who has pneumonia, diagnosed today, that his goofy mom and dad thought was a cold--nice), for all of their help from guarding people from entering areas with falling trees, to raking and removing leaves and debris, to shoveling loads of rocks, to working in the dumpster to help pushing down forestry discards, so we could add more in there, and for declaring when a lunch break was needed (the kids are union contracted).
But, most importantly, thanks to the Schoolcraft Rotaract Club members: Josh, Keith, Fred, Evan, Vanilza, and Edwina for giving up a Saturday after a long week of school, work, family, and parenting, to put service to others ahead of yourselves, and clean up a yard and home which was covered in eight years of brush, overgrown trees, and everything else you can imagine. I am so proud of the work you, and your fellow club members who were there in spirit, have done, and will do, by putting service above self. What an honor it is to be the faculty mentor of your club. With that in mind, please allow me to introduce you to our Board Members at Large, who have agreed to take on the following roles:
Edwina Jackson--President
Fred Kiel--Vice-president
Evan Allen--Treasurer and Technologies Director
Keith Pollard--Secretary
Josh Franks--Public Relations Director
Vanilza Rodriguez--Club Photographer
Once again--thanks to all for this incredible opportunity and day--we worked hard and had a whole bunch of fun, especially Fred, Keith, and Evan, who got to ride in my Honda Element and listen to Disco from Livonia to Belleville, and back again--an experience they soon won't forget!
Enjoy the pictures,
Dawn Ham-Kucharski, Proud Faculty Mentor to the Schoolcraft Rotary Club
