Bill Jasman's - Indonesia Trip

Bill Jasman has returned from Indonesia after a very successful VSG trip. Below are just a small sampling of the pictures and activities he did while there. Bill would be happy to visit your club after September 1st to talk about a new international project. If you are looking for a Sister Club, Bill also has a club looking for a Sister Club. Rotarians from Yogyakarta were great hosts and invite Rotarians from District 6400 to visit District 3400 and all the special things that Indonesia has to offer.

08-09-032 Bill with the Yogyakarta Tamansary Club at their club meeting. There Club meetings are one hour of fellowship and dinner, then followed by a 1 1/2 to 2 hour meeting.
08-09-045 Bill with the Yogyakarta Tamansary Club touring successful post earthquake projects. This 28 member club rebuilt roads with paver bricks over a 4 1/2 year project, rebuilding roads and foot paths to the neighborhood mosque.
08-09-050 Although most homeowners were given 12-15,000 dollars to repair their homes after the earthquake, some did not rebuild.
08-09-051 Former exchange Student Caroline Mursito and her club toured Bill through the neighborhood.
08-09-053 After the earthquake, Rotarians and the Government built these Bamboo Shelters that were shared by 5 to 6 Families.
08-09-056 Rotary Responded by building 4 Public Bathrooms
08-09-063 This is a Yogyakarta Tamansary Club Kindergarten.
08-09-064 The Yogyakarta Tamansary Club has supplied much of the internal equipment after the builidng was built by Humanity in Motion.
08-09-70a Rotarians from Yogyakarta Tamansary Club along with Bill Jasman are shown that all the playground equipment is broken in one way or another. All of it is steel and needs to be welded up.
08-09-072 Here's another broken piece.
08-09-075 After finding out repair costs and a basic need for first aid equipment, Rotarian Bill Jasman gives a donation to cover the repair costs and purchase the first aid equipment which will help Make Dreams Real for children by allowing the school to be certified by Government inspectors this week.
08-09-077 After that, the Rotarians went to visit a small mosque near the Sultan's Palace in Yogyakarta.
08-09-080a This Flowchart shows how the library was begun.
08-09-081 There is a limited number of books in the library. Indonesians can use English and Indonesian language books, but their libraries are 95% Indonesian Language.
08-09-083 Bill is pictured with Rotex Members at the Library. We even found the Rotary Apple Dumpling Gang Book.

08-10-015 Traffic is very hectic in Yogyakarta. It is also called Student City with over 122 Universities and Colleges. Motorcycles provide the main form of transportation in this tropical country, 7 degrees below the equator.
08-10-019 Rotarians set out on Sunday walking uphill 2 kilometers to get up into a much poorer village on Mount Merapi. Rotarians are trying to help villagers collect and ship water to their homes. Extreme Drought and shifting water sources have caused women to have to carry water for up to 2 Kilometers a day.
08-10-020 Rotarians speak to local government officials. By the way, this building also contains the area Radio Station. Looking for a new job DG Bruce?
08-10-024 NGO's and Rotary Clubs have created catch basins for collecting rainwater. Only problem is there is no way to keep insects and dirt and ash out of them, algae growth and also present a danger to children.
08-10-027 Here's another algae ridden water source
08-10-030 Chickens, Chickens and more Chickens everwhere.
08-10-033 Bill is checking out another algae ridden water storage problem.
08-10-034 Mountain Villagers forest out brush to feed animals and for food for themselves. They may carry these bundles up to 2 Kilometers.

08-10-037 Chris and some of the Community Volunteers are explaining that the groundwater source is right here. Pumps are protected by the covers and also locks.
08-10-040 Some Rotarians wash there hands from the water.
08-10-043 Here are 4 of the sources that are piped up the hill. Some of these were broken during the earthquake and funds
08-10-050 Heres Bill with the Yogyakarta Tamasari Club up at the Source of the Water.
08-10-056 Here's Bill getting pinned by District Governor Keliek JS LM Juliestylanmi Nurtjahjana after giving a brief speech to Club Presidents, representatives and AG's. They all thought the Trenton Club is a great club also.
08-11-029 Bill is with Rotex studnets visiting the Hindu Temples outside of Yogyakarta.
08-11-062 Bill received a vest from the Yogyakarta Mataram Club and exchanges Banners with the President.
08-11-067 Bill posing with the members of the Mataram Club. They also gave Bill a Matching grant for a Scholarship program to provide schooling to children who would not get schooled without it.
08-12-001 Bill in front of the prayer altar to Buddah
08-12-035 The Buddhist Ancient Temple dates back to 800 CE(AD) It Stands 132 Meters (400 ft) high by 132 Meters wide by 132 Meters deep and was the first learning center in Indonesia. It had three levels of learning.
08-12-046 A Buddhist Guide explains some of the ancient carvings on the huge Buddhist temple to the Rotarians from the Magelan and Yogyakara Tamasari Clubs who joined us in touring the temple.
08-12-070 Former Youth Exchange Student provided Bill with translation services and guided Bill to see some of the Cultural Aspects of Indonesia.
08-12-099 The Magelan Club provided a small herd for Beef Production to a small village outside of the Temple. 30 residents tend a herd of 23 animals. They recycle food from the dump for the animals. They are looking to purchase more animals. The poor are feeding them from local government land. They are allowed to stay as long as they protect the communities Landfilling heavy equipment.
08-12-104 They would also like to replace the Barn and stable area. They require training in Animal Husbandry to help make this project sustainable.
08-12-107 Bill Collects information from the Rotarians so they can work together on a solution.
08-12-108 We then went to a Rotary Supported Rural Library. Every project Rotary does in Yogyakarta does have a Rotary wheel somewhere.
08-12-111 The library serves over 770 people and is in need of more shelving and a larger space.
08-12-112 The librarian explains her needs and what her wishes for the future are to provide basic literary skills to the poor farmers around them. She herself only make $30-$50 per month.
08-12-119 There is a lot of land on this site. Plenty enough that this playground would not be impacted by the construction. They also have all ready aquired some land. $5000 would build the addion, with a matching grant - $2500 in books, media and display equipment would be greatly appreciated. A new international project if anyone wants it.
08-12-122 Bill was then taken to the Yogyakarta Malioboro Club to visit a Health Services Center and Library in one of two buildings. They would like to Make Dreams real for children by Computerizing Clients for better tracking, providing video delivered health services and eduction services, and expand the library.
08-12-123 Here's the small library in this building.
08-12-124 Here's where women bring in the babies on the 12th of the month to have them checked up and weighed for free
08-12-125 Rotary also offers them food to encourage them to come. Bill then sat down with Club Members to help drive better scoping for the enhancements. If you are interested in this project, contact Bill Jasman at jasmanw@wowway.com
08-13-023 We proceeded the next day to travel with the Yogyakarta Merapi Club to Mt. Merapi projects. The first school had its roof replaced. This is a free government school. The building is intact, but the walls have pieces knocked out of them. These schools serve the poor farming children around Mt Merapi - the Volcano that drove many from this area two years ago.
08-13-032 The desks need replacing after 30 years of use, they are carved into and have holes punched through them by falling debris from the Bantul Earthquake 2 years ago. Each room could have desks replaced, walls finished and painted and chalk board replaced for around $1000 US. There are two schools needing services like this. The Principal of this school has also offered his office to become a library and media center. If seven clubs wanted to participate, 3500 of matching money could be applied for the library and media center.
08-13-038 The Second Grade Class Room has no solid wall to separate it from the 3rd Grade, this also needs improvement.
08-13-53 The Yogyakarta Merapi Club then proceeded to take Bill further into the villages to meet some of their clients.
08-13-057 Yogyakarta Merapi Club has been teaching them about non-chemical pesticides to improve Planet Earth by reducing toxins. Here a villager explains to the Rotarians about how it improved her crop yield, how it has kept her land from drying out and she has now gotten 5 more farmers to change their way. Rotarians also gave her 18 packages of schooling and coloring books for families. I told her that she was a strong woman and reminded me of many of whom I met in Central America. This great little club is looking for a sister club in the US. If you are interested, contact Bill Jasman at jasmanw@wowway.com
08-13-067 While the Mt Merapi farmers are in Drought conditions and have to carry water 2 KM's at times, there is ample water at sea level in villages below the mountain. However, the word may be turbid. Check out this well.
08-13-068 Here a homeowner explains her problems with her water source. I asked the Rotarians to get it tested for sanitary reasons. The Rotarians are looking for water filters for 600 families.
08-14-132 Bill spent his last day touring the south of Bantul and down to the Indian Ocean. Rotex Members and Exchange Student Kevin Kai-Chaing Hasiao took Bill to the Indian Ocean. Behind them, its only 2000 miles to Australia.
08-13-011 After the trip back and a brief rest, Bill then attended the Yogyakarta Tamasari Arista Fundraiser for Children Here teenagers show their abilities to dance Middle Eastern dances.
08-13-012 The Yogyakarta Tamasari Rotary Club chose to thank Bill for coming at this event. He was given a package of neat Rotary items.
08-13-014 President Julie and Bill Jasman exchange Club Banners.
08-13-017 Bill Jasman and Caroline Mursito present President Julie a Donation of $500 toward their children's literacy project for the Yogyarta Tamasari Rotary Club and publicly acknolodged their Club and all the other clubs who helped Bill while on the trip. Bill also acknolowged
08-13-019 All District 6400 Rotarians watch out, their are other great MC's in the world. Here three members of the Yogyarta Tamasari Rotary Club introduce the runner up in the Indonesian Idol Contest, who performed two 30 minute sets for the crowd.
08-13-036 Here Rini sings to the crowd of 600

Finally,
08-13-2008-058 Bill is very exhausted from a busy trip. A link is here with a spreadsheet with all the potential projects that Bill found while he was visiting with Rotarians in Indonesia. Click Here for the spreadsheet. It was a very busy Volunteer Service Grant trip that funded Bill's activities. Bill would once again like to thank the Yogyakarta Tamasari Rotary Club for their hospitality. If you would like to hear more about this trip and the grant, contact Bill at jasmanw@wowway.com for more information.
