Tanzania, Africa Trip

PDG Jennifer Jones, Nick Krayacich, Shelly & Mike Duben recently had a trip to Tanzania, Africa that included pleasure and Rotary Service. Time was spent in national parks, climbing to the Mt. Kilimanjaro summit, visiting Moshi orphanges and schools.  They help deliver over 1000 donated mosquto nets to children to help prevent being bittern by malaria infected mosquitoes.

Once we descended the mountain, we spent time delivering Malaria nets and saw first hand the great need. This was the magic part of the trip. We visited an orphanage, a trade school and a women¹s project. Each one filled our hearts. It is an extremely poor area and they were so grateful. This truly made the entire trip worthwhile. We donated 500 mosquito nets to Old Moshi Secondary School, a boarding school with over 800 students, about 3/4 of whom cannot afford mosquito nets. These nets were donated by Brad Jensen, former Ambassadorial Scholar from Plymouth, and our Rotary Club paid for the shipping of the nets. The headmaster of the school said that the education of many of their students is disrupted due to malaria. Our donation should ensure that all students are protected.

Another 500 nets were donated to the women and children of a very poor community outside of Moshi. They were dressed in their "Sunday best" to greet us and express their gratitude for the nets. We were told that mosquitoes are a huge problem in the area, as it is close to a large sugar plantation. Children are often bitten and succumb to malaria. The donation of several hundred nets should significantly reduce the number of cases of malaria in the community. These animals were in three different national parks that we visited. It was truly magical to see them in their own natural environment.
